Troubles with a Cadillac stopping at the wrong times.
« on: January 15, 2018, 06:02:04 PM »
Hi all and a Happy New Year,I am having a problem with after my 1960 Cadillac  stopping dead, and not restarting most recently after driving for 8 to 10 klms and after making a sharp left turn. After checking the simple things like battery etc still nothing,so next move was a tilt tray home, after getting home about a hour later,I got into the car and guest what instant  start up without touching anything other than the key.I took it for a short run along with a number of stopping and restarting, all great. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks Peter.

G'day Peter,

How is the coil?

Check the wiring at the coil and the distributor.   Could be a loose terminal?

If it only happens on a sharp Left Turn, then look for a "floating" wire, or loom.

Thanks Bruce, would a loose coil wire or distributor wire cause no power that all, e.g. no headlights, horn or dash lights gauges and ignition, just dead,a hour later back to life without touching anything, after a few short runs with heaps of starting seems o.k. ????? Peter
Are you making the trip to Renmark in March ,hoping to see you there.

G'day Peter,

No, that short of loss of power would be involved with the power from the Battery itself.

Loose battery terminal, poor connection at the Starter Motor Solenoid.

The power to the headlight switch is directly from the main power supply, whereas the Ignition power is via the ignition switch.

Actually, you could have a faulty Ignition Switch if the power take-off to the headlights is from the battery terminal of the Ignition switch.

I cannot recall what my own '60 had as the wiring, as it was converted to RHD, and therefore not original.

We depart for the Renmark sojourn on the 16th March, and pulling into Renmark on the Wednesday.
