G'day Quentin,
Hang in there, and congratulations on getting so far in your recovery of these priceless items.

Looks like you are dealing with a Police Officer that understands the value of specialised car parts, and hopefully, you will get everything back.

Cadillac Chat Room / Re: Stolen 53 Eldorado parts.
« Last post by Quentin Hall on February 19, 2018, 07:06:11 AM »
Encouraging news with Sen Sgt Mat Ryan of Ferny Grove Police finally acknowledging the theft of my priceless 53Eldorado parts.
One of the most frustrating elements has been the procedural slowness of establishing the chain of events and then identifying a timeline and then a who did what.
After sending the thief a letter of demand from my lawyer, some of the parts have been recovered. Most importantly the vent wings for car #412 prominently stamped 411 (because the Eldos were bespoke the windshield and vent wings were polished and chromed as a set and can vary in sequence from the designated car by up to 20 cars), have been located and returned and a clear trail of how they got from Brisbane to Melbourne established. This serial number is crucial because it clearly shows the fact that parts were taken off what was a very valuable vehicle, 53 Eldorado #412.. This is just a pair of many stolen parts returned . There are still many parts yet to be returned though.
Still outstanding a full rechromed rear bumper, unchromed front bumpers, a pair of nos Guide S18 spotlights, rechromed foglight housings and 24k gold fender scripts and Eldorado only stainless trim removed from once complete units. A nos  set of 53 wire hubcaps too and 57 Eldorado sun visor brackets and an irreplaceable 53 Eldo seat badge. Nos 53 Eldo wiper arm. Rear armrest bolsters. The list goes on and on. Disappointing is that many components have been returned stripped of brand new hydraulic rams, hydraulic lines, fan motors, trim, etc.
I am pushing the police hard to press charges on the thief who has used the cover of back to back Intervention orders issued by Dandenong Magistrates Court to obfuscate the fact that he came onto my property without my permission and stole many many items, that represent a lifetime of scouring and collecting. Once the second Year long Intervention Order expires I may decide to confront the thief directly to return or reimburse me for the outstanding parts. If that holds no sway then sueing him via the Queensland Magistrates Court will be the next direct action.
Sen Sgt Simon Godwin rang me at 2pm yesterday to further discuss the 411 provenance. Ill be talking with him later in the week.
Im confidant that soon the tables turn on this thief coward who for the past, nearly two years, has tormented me with his smug use of Intervention Orders.

General Technical Help / Re: Steering Column / Gear Selector rattle
« Last post by TimL on February 14, 2018, 08:40:15 PM »
Hi bruce,

Yep, holding the selector lever stops it.  If I grab the selector ring which the gear lever is attached to and rotate it I can replicate the rattle.

I was hoping to find out if the problem is worn gates at the top of the column or somewhere lower (i.e.linkages or transmission selector).

Never happened with my '60 CDV, but that was RHD.

Any rattling could be from a worn out upper or lower bearing in the column, or even a loose shift link.

If you hold the gear selector with your hand, does the rattle stop?

General Technical Help / Steering Column / Gear Selector rattle
« Last post by TimL on February 12, 2018, 08:21:27 PM »
Hi All,

My '59 has a rattle in the steering column, coming from the gear selector.  My '60 Cadillac had exactly the same problem.

It rattles when you run over small corrugations (as commonly found on Melbourne tram lines), and it will often do it if the engine idles at a certain rpm.  I can also reproduce the sound by moving the selector up and down quickly.  I am not sure if it is coming from the linkages or the transmission selector gates.

Does anyone else have this issue, and more importantly can you give me an idea how I can eliminate it?  It really detracts from the beauty of driving the car.  :-(
