My ambulance has arrived
« on: October 02, 2010, 07:57:21 AM »
In case anyone is interested to know, my 1960 Ambulance has finally arrived after a couple of weeks of hassles with Murrells Logistics, who were contracted to re-clean the car for AQIS. Note: if you ever hear Murrells mentioned, stay well clear of them, they were jerks right til the bitter end when the tow truck arrived to pick it up from them.

Wayne the towie, on the other hand, is a deadset champion. The most reliable and helpful tow truck driver I've ever met. If you ever need a car moved from Port Kembla, give Wayne a call.

All my parts were present and undamaged, fortunately.

Unfortunately Murrells had removed anything that was screwed down, including seats, floorboards, and trim. So I've got a mountain of trim pieces on the floor of my garage.

This car is a project so it's condition is a bit rougher than what most of you would bother to import, but there aren't many of them left in the world so I was happy to find it. The main concerns are the floors and sills for starters - quite rusty - but I'm happy that 95% of the parts are there, and all the impossible-to-find glass is there.

The ultimate plan is to build one of these (criticisms from Ecto-1 haters will not be entertained, thank you, hehe):

Good to see another classic caddy hit our shores !

You'll have to keep us updated as the restoration progresses.

G'day Rick,

Congratulations on getting the beast home, and in one piece.

Your above quote reminded me of when I imported three cars in 1989, in a 40 foot container.

When the Customs and Quarantine opened the container, in my presence, they exclaimed "You actually want this crap" (other word used and they said it in a happy tone), and just couldn't believe that anyone would bring in at great cost rusty half bodies (a '41 Ford Business Coupe and a '42 Ford Club Coupe) plus my rough '35 Ford 3 Window Coupe, and promptly walked away, not wanting to inspect anything.   Just as well, as you should have seen the crap that was inside these cars.    Well, actually laying on the floor of the container seeing as there were so many holes in the floors of the cars.

Bruce. >:D

PS.   Yours looks mint to me.

I wish they were like that these days! They see dollar signs now when a container arrives with old cars in it.

Thanks guys. This car now has Doug Lemons tick of approval, hehe. He and Robyn stopped by this arvo to have a quick look. Gives me some confidence in what can be done.

Good onya rick.
Look forward to seeing the resto. Sorry to hear about the bad experience with the logistics mob, but I'm sure it'll be worth it in the long term.

Hmmm, hit a bit of a stumbling block trying to get the car mobile. Fuel lines are all disconnected, no fuel pump, water pump leaking, and engine harness was spliced to run this 350 and I can barely make heads or tails of what's been done. Done some reading on the internet and apparently this model of 350 used an in-tank fuel pump (Chev Suburban).

I just need to be able to move the car in and out of the driveway, so I might have to try a 12v in-line fuel pump to a fuel container and see if it starts.

Yup ! Good ole Yankee know how strikes again !

My old '55 Series 62 Coupe was a real mess electrically ! Under the dash was a web of mismatched wiring, connectors and miles of electrical tape. They even bypassed the Neutral Safety Switch, so the car could be started in any gear.

Makes me wonder just how lax the US standards, or roadworthy requirements are  ???

Very lax I'd say, but all this work was done while the car was in Mexico. So times that by 2.

The motor is obviously a retro-fit attempt just to get the car mobile, there's random lines and fittings blanked off, wires that are disconnected or that don't have anywhere to go, and wires that have been twisted together with other wires. They must've sourced the motor from another busted-arse Chevy.

Sometime down the track I'll have to decide what to do about the engine situation. This engine probably isn't suitable without further modification. So I'll either have to find another Caddy motor/trans, or get a crate motor and start again.

Congrats Rick, it's looking good, lots of work ahead, but if you can keep those planes flying it shouldn't be too difficult a job for you. I'm sure it will look very cool when it's done.

Yeah I saw them, thanks. Fortunately I'm not missing much trim. I do need some MM side mirrors though, I might send the guy an email and see if he's got any.
