Ď70 DeVille ignition barrel issue
« on: April 02, 2019, 05:46:37 PM »
Turned the key at one stage to start her up and heard a crack.
After that igition barrel rattled and wasnít spring loaded anymore.
so I went to buy a new ignition barrel, installed it - and still the same issue.
Can anyone guess where the issue might be?
Cheers,
Henri

Henri,

The spring loading is in the ignition switch, which is controlled by the pushrod that runs from the ignition lock assembly, down to the ignition switch, which is attached to the steering column housing around the shaft.

Check to see if the ignition switch is still in one piece.

Thanks for your advice Bruce!
I took the ignition switch off, put a hook tool in it, pulled it and engine turned over right away.
So itís not the switch..
Looking into the steering column, i can see some gears turning when i turn the key.
Turning the key and simultaneously holding the rod going from the gears to ignition swith, it loses grip and starts skipping gears.
Is there any way i can adjust it, change the gears or...?
Cheers,
Henri

Henri,

Sounds like you are in need of either a replacement barrel housing, or the gear shaft that the switch rod attaches to.

If the gear cog and pawl don't mesh, then the diecast teeth could be worn away.

Is your column a Tilt?

If it is, then you might be limited to Tilt-only replacement parts.

Where abouts are you?

Bruce.

PS.   Do you have the Shop Manual?

Iím located in Sydney.
Yes, itís a tilt column.
I ordered a shop manual, most likely get it tomorrow or Friday with the rest of the parts I ordered.
Iíve looked around, but canít find anyone selling the sector gears. Is that the correct name for the gears in there?
Thought i might get them first before i start sourcing the new housing.
Or is there any obvious signs of either one being bad?
Your help is much appreciated Bruce!
Cheers,
Henri

The shaft that the rod is attached to is called the Rack.   It will be described in Section 9 of the Shop Manual, well, it is in my '72 Manual.

The Shop Manual will be one of the best purchases that you will make.

I received my shop manual today and it truly is an amazing piece of literature.
So continued disassembling the column.
As soon as i removed the housing i saw that the rack and sector werenít lined up. Taking the sector out i realised itís missing some of the gears.
I ordered one from classic industries which was the cheapest option. Will update once itís installed.
Thanks again Bruce!

Henri
