1960 rear main seal

What type of seal was installed at the factory? Rope type? I have been reading about replacing the seal by removing the bearing cap and tapping the old seal around and out of the groove in the block, and wouldlike to know if anyone has done this sucessfully. It sounds like the 2 piece lip type seal would be easier to do than the rope type.

The '60 uses a Neoprene seal, but I have never done the replacement without combining it with a total engine rebuild.

But, any engine requiring a rope seal will still work if properly done.

The biggest problem with using a neoprene sea in place of a rope seal is in the surface of the crankshaft which the seal, runs on.

Look closely at the surface, and if there is a series of small angled grooves around the circumference of the shaft, then these need to be cleaned out so the oil can be drawn back into the engine.   These grooves make using a Neoprene Seal a recipe for disaster, as these seals "like" a plain journal to ride on.
